The funny thing is that the very first time I mentioned the Itty Bitty Shitty Committee, I didn’t really have to explain what I was talking about. As soon as you make mention of the critical inner voice, you get that knowing look and the nodding of the head as if to say, mmhmm, I totally get where you are going with this one…

The truth is, e.v.e.r.y.o.n.e has had more than a few runs ins with the IBSC gang, simply because they’re a natural part of who we are. That voice that you hear- the one that says you aren’t good enough or you don’t have what it takes or who are you to dream that big- it’s a voice that pipes up as soon as you stray towards the edges of your comfort zone.

And the closer you get, the louder it becomes.

Why do we do this then? If everyone wishes that voice would pipe down, why do we let ourselves keep listening?

Well, truth of the matter is that the IBSC are trying to keep you safe. They want to make sure that you stay right where you are thankyouverymuch, because venturing “over there” might see you come to emotional or physical harm. I mean, what if you make a fool or yourself? What if you actually can’t do it? What if you get hurt?

The problem is that while the IBSC intends to keep you safe, it does so at the expense of everything else. You might hear less of it if all you did was sat on an upturned bucket and drank tea (chances are it would still have something to say- it would be the wrong bucket) but it’s most definitely not concerned with you being the best gosh dang rider and horseperson you can be. In fact, that kind of talk makes them feel very twitchy and uncomfortable.

The way forward? To get mindful of the conversations that we’re having with ourselves, know when to pay attention, and when to give them the flick.

That’s where I come in. I hear a whole lotta talk about the IBSC and I’ve decided to arm you with a few tools to help you take stock…. Enter the Getting Out of Your Own Way Series (Part One): Dealing with the Itty Bitty Shitty Committee!
